Live the American Dream

Everytime I walked pass City Link Mall, I will pass by this restaurant, tempted by the photos of the food hanging all over the place. It seems almost like they are shouting out for me to give them a try. And finally last Sat, try I did.
New York New York is basically a American restaurant selling food from the land of freedom (yes, they even have fries that called Freedom Fries instead of French Fries). Well, there are nothing really special about American Dishes ... except they come in huge portion.
I don't really say that the portion is huge, but it is enough to fill my big tummy.

Tempted by the description, I decided to forgo getting mozzarella cheese in exchange for 'Very Sinful, fried cheeseball oozing with cheese' and buffalo wings for starter.

Smoky Cheese Ball

When the Smoky Cheese Ball ($7.90) arrived, it does looks tempting. And I can't wait to sink my teeth onto it and let the cheese flow into my mouth. On my first bite .... it was kind of disappointed. Nothing close to oozing with cheese nor I think it was sinful. Yes, there was some cheese .. together with some bits of potato .... really taste like 'Hashbrown Ball with cheese'. I really kinda of feel like being 'smoked' by the smoky cheese ball.

Buffalo Wings

The buffalo wings ($6.90) is much better. 4 huge wings (cut into 8 pieces) and it comes with a cheese dip (i think is blue cheese, which surprisingly ah pui soh (who hate blue cheese) says she like it with the 'smoky cheeseball' .. hmm maybe I could let her try it with garlic dip :p). 8 juicy piece of chicken, not the best chicken wings in town, but still reasonable good enough. The wings are well marinated, and when dipped with blue cheese ....... yummy ;)

For the main course, I order a Roast Beef Sandwich (Beefeater, $7.90). It comes with the sandwich and some greens and sad to say ... no the usual fries or mash potato. The sandwich taste .. well I would say average. But the bread itself is toasted just nice, not too hard or soft that will become soggy when the juices and sauce gets into the bread.

We also order a Pork Chop Pasta in cream sauce ($16.90). A bit on the expensive side (as compare to other dishes) but I would say the pork chop taste great. Nicely fried, juicy and not too hard. So I am not complaining.

Overall, I would say that this place is not really fantastic, but also not that bad. It is a good place to gather with your friends (yes, the place with kinda noisy), good for all the gossiping and laughing. Average pricing, decent food portion and a good selection of American style drinks like rootbeer float, ice-cream sodas and ice-cream. And did I forget to mention, there are free flow of candyfloss, yes free :)

I would give this place a Ahpui score of 6.5/10. Not die die must try, but no harm trying.

The Duel of the Creams

Was talking to my colleagues few weeks ago, got to know about a joint that is selling ice-cream, good ice-cream, at Serene Center. And Ahpui Soh also mentioned about another joint at Clementi Arcade, selling well, also good ice-cream. How can I give good ice-cream a miss, so I decide to check out both store.

Daily Scoop :
Hidden deep inside Sunset Way, next to Ulu Pandan River, is Clementi Arcade, where the store lies. The is really a bit ulu indeed. The 'day special' was Ginger Ice-Cream, well, I had tried Garlic Ice-Cream, not ginger. But I am not in the mood for ginger today. I am looking forward for Cherry Brandy, Lychee Martini and other more funky flavours. Sampled some, a bit disappointed here. Indeed, there are lots of exciting, not your usual, flavours for me to choose. But the taste, or I should say after taste, don't not give me 'ormph' feeling. No really close to Haagen Dazs or Ben& Jerry. It feels a bit weak. But don't want to waste my effort in coming all the way here, I brought a tub of Lychee Martini (400ml) $8.80, 700ml for $14.50.
Well, after eating 3/4 of a tub, I feel quite satisfy. Not as good as my favorite Summer Berry Cream (HG) or Cherry Garcia (B&J), but it is a good change in taste.

Island Creamery :
Smack right at Serene Centre, facing Bukit Timah Rd, it enjoys a good student crowd. When I was there, most of the tables are taken up by customer in their teens or early twenties. All the different flavours were nicely display at the counter, and of course, plenty of eye candy around the eatery :p
They have some unique flavours like local themed : Tiger Beer Sorbet, Teh Tarek, Pulut Hitam, Chendol and others like : Brandied Cherry, Mango and Apple Pie. A scoop for $2.50 (for all flavours), and a tub of 500ml cost around $8 and for certain flavours like Brandied Cherry or Tiger Beer Sorbet will cost $11. (well this part I don't really understand, why same price for a scoop of any flavous but different price when we want to buy in a tub?)
I got a scoop of Brandied Cherry, which I would say it is GOOOD ! I can really taste the brandy and there are bits and pieces of cherry in it. I also sample Teh Tarek ... and well, it really taste like Teh Tarek, frozen Teh Tarek in fact. And AhPui Soh brought a tub of Chendol Ice-Cream, which to me, well, it is basically a tub of frozen Chendol.
Will I still come back ? Yes, of course I will. For the Brandied Cherry and ... erh, well the view is good too :p Sweetness for your tongue and candy for your eyes ;)

I love Nasi Lemak

Last week, I drop by Adam's Rd Hawker Center to try the famous Selera Rasa Nasi Lemak.

Well, famous it is (we are lucky enough to be the last customer before they are sold out). But, well maybe expectations were high, the meal is slightly short of 'great'.

To be fair, the whole dish is good, but just not really that fantastic that I would want to travel all the way to here just to try it (well, at least not in the near future :p). The nasi lemak comes in different sets, from a basic (fish, ikan bilis and egg), to various IR theme set meal like Full House and Royal Flush, each come with different sides.
I ordered a Full House ($4), and it comes with egg, ikan bilis, fried chicken wing and a otah. The rice was nicely cooked, with a nice coconut milk fragrant, fluffy and best of all, doesn't feel oily. A key ingredient to a nice nasi lemak, it's the chili - which in here it has the right sweetness and not too spicy. The otah was good too, spicy enough but not too hot. And the ikan bilis was really crispy, I love it ! What disappoint me was the chicken wing (yes, i know chicken wing was not a 'standard' nasi lemak side). Normally, a good malay fried chicken wing was nicely marinate and the skin is crispy with a hint of spices. But this one was just like a normal chicken wing (it is crispy though), without the hint of spices that I am looking for. This was really disappointed.

Overall, I would say the Nasi Lemak is good, worth trying if you happened to be around Adam's Rd Hawker center. I would give it a 7/10.
